At Blue Haven, I love a good transformation—but sometimes the best projects aren’t the dramatic ones. Sometimes, they’re the simple, real-life refreshes that meet a home exactly where it is.

This week, I spent a few hours helping my sister freshen up the kitchen in her 1910 home. Like so many older houses, it came with its own layered history… including some very determined, very dated wallpaper.

We gave it a fair shot—but it quickly became clear:

This wallpaper wasn’t going anywhere.

So we pivoted.

Instead of fighting it, we decided to work with what we had and paint right over it.

The Starting Point:

Layers of old wallpaper, partially removed in places, still clinging on in others. Not exactly a clean slate—but also not the end of the world.
Sometimes you look at a project and realize: this doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to be better.

The Plan:

We kept it simple:
No full tear-out
No perfection pressure
Just a fresh coat of paint to brighten and update the space
Because sometimes, that’s enough.

A Very Happy Accident

And in true Blue Haven fashion, the paint color wasn’t even planned!

I had added this blue—Adirondack Blue—to my Lowe’s online cart while searching for a completely different project (I was actually hunting for my bedroom color, which ended up being SW’s Favorite Jeans), and I forgot to remove it before placing an order for deck stain.

A few days later, it showed up on my doorstep, and for a moment, I had no idea why. Instead of returning it, I offered it to my sister—and as it turns out, it was exactly the color her kitchen needed.

Sometimes, you find out that the best design decisions aren’t decisions at all!

The Process:

We used a thick, high-quality paint and applied it directly over the wallpaper.

The first coat went on surprisingly well—better than expected, honestly. It took about 2.5 hours to complete, and we left it to dry overnight.

With projects like this, the key is simple: keep moving, don’t overthink it, and trust the process.

And yes—this is one of those “let’s see how she behaves” situations. Painting over wallpaper always comes with a little bit of mystery. But so far? So good.

It’ll dry better but you can see how the first layer is showing a bit of patches but it dries well. Trust me. 😉

The Result (So Far)

Even after just one coat, the difference is dramatic.

The busy, dated wallpaper has been softened by a calm, cohesive blue that instantly makes the space feel cleaner, brighter, and more current.

It’s not a full renovation.

It’s not a perfect, down-to-the-studs makeover.

But it is a meaningful, visible change—and sometimes that’s exactly what a space needs.

A Little More About This One

This project felt a little different.

My sister and her husband are away this week, and I wanted to surprise her with a fresher, brighter kitchen when she gets home.

She’s about to begin a new chapter with her health, and while I can’t take that journey for her, I can make her space feel a little more peaceful, a little more cared for.

Sometimes, the smallest changes—a fresh coat of paint, a lighter room, a space that feels reset—can make a bigger difference than we expect.
